NUR 593 Module 7 Significant Learning Self-Reflection Example

Reviewed by Ingrid Vasterling, MSN, RN Arizona State University Updated October 2026

This NUR 593 Module 7 sample paper is the significant learning self-reflection that closes the applied project portfolio in ASU's Applied Project course, graded as Critical Reflection. ASU NUR 593 describes the reflection as a synthesis of significant course learning and its application to future practice, the last step of the online MS in Nursing capstone. The composite mother-baby unit educator organizes her reflection by Fink's six kinds of significant learning: what she learned about evidence and safe sleep, how she applied it, how the parts of the project connected, what she learned about herself and others, what she now cares about, and how she will keep learning. She ends with how the project will shape her practice as a nurse educator.

From a Bassinet Audit to a Way of Thinking: A Significant Learning Self-Reflection on the Applied Project

Introduction

When I began this course, I thought of my applied project as a requirement to complete. My first step, auditing 30 bassinets, changed that. Seeing that only 9 of 30 sleeping infants on my own unit were in a safe environment turned the project into something I needed to do. This reflection uses the taxonomy of significant learning (Fink, 2013) to describe what changed.

Foundational Knowledge

I learned the 2022 AAP recommendations in detail, including newer guidance on inclined sleepers and bed sharing (Moon et al., 2022). More important, I learned how to tell the difference between levels of evidence. Before this course, I would have treated every published article as equally strong. Now I can recognize that most safe sleep studies are quality improvement projects, and I can explain why consistent findings across them still justify action.

Application

I applied the full sequence of evidence-based practice: forming a PICOT question, searching databases systematically, building an evidence table, synthesizing findings and designing an evaluation plan with a threshold for success. The skill I expect to use most is writing measurable outcomes. My first draft aimed to improve safe sleep awareness; my final plan aims for 80% compliance for four consecutive weeks.

Integration

The synthesis assignment showed me how the pieces connect. A finding from one study, that nurses' knowledge was high while unsafe conditions persisted (Stone et al., 2023), changed my intervention, my primary outcome and my evaluation plan. I now see evidence review, intervention design and evaluation as one continuous line of reasoning rather than separate assignments.

Human Dimension

I learned that I avoid conflict with tired parents. In my baseline audit, I noticed that I was more willing to move a blanket than to wake a mother sleeping with her baby. Writing the education module forced me to practice respectful scripts for those conversations. I also learned from classmates in emergency and pediatric settings, whose comments on my presentation pushed me to think about families who go home with nowhere safe for the baby to sleep.

Caring

I care more now about what parents see, not only what we tell them. The evidence that parents' recall of teaching improved when nurses changed their practice (Sleutel et al., 2018) made me realize that every bassinet on my unit is a lesson, whether or not anyone intends it.

Learning How to Learn

The most lasting change is in how I approach problems. I now start with a small local measurement, then look for evidence, then test a change and measure again. I will keep using a reference manager, set database alerts for new safe sleep studies and use run charts for future unit projects.

Application to Future Practice

As a nurse educator with a master's degree, I plan to implement the safe sleep bundle with my unit's practice council, share results at our hospital's quality fair and mentor staff nurses who want to lead their own projects. The capstone gave me a project, but more importantly, it gave me a way of working.

What the NUR 593 Module 7 instructions ask for

The current syllabus places Assignment 7, the significant learning self-reflection, in Course Module 10, which it calls Let's Cross the Finish Line and which covers significant learning, alongside student surveys and course evaluations. Critical Reflection is worth 10 of 100 points and is described as a synthesis of significant course learning and its application to future practice. Expect the prompt to use a significant learning framework, such as Fink's categories, and to ask how the project changed your knowledge, skills, values and future practice. Canvas will show the length and whether the framework categories are required. Gather your graded portfolio pieces and faculty comments first, since the strongest reflections quote specific changes between early drafts and final work.

Inside the NUR 593 Module 7 example

The reflection opens with the moment the project became personal, then uses Fink's six categories as headings so each kind of learning is covered. Each section gives a specific example from the project rather than a general statement, such as the change from an awareness goal to a measurable threshold. Citations appear where a source shaped the learning. The final section connects the learning to concrete plans in the writer's role as an educator. Four references support the reflection, including the framework source. Each category opens with a plain statement of what was learned, followed by the example, which keeps the reflection focused and easy to follow. The paper stays near the expected length by choosing one example per category.

NUR 593 Module 7 rubric: what earns full marks

Self-reflections are commonly graded on depth and honesty of reflection, use of a significant learning framework, specific examples from the project, connection between learning and future practice, and clear, professional writing. Faculty look for evidence of real change in thinking or practice rather than a summary of assignments. Naming a personal growth area, such as avoiding conflict, shows the self-awareness the human dimension category aims for. Concrete future plans complete the synthesis the syllabus describes. Citing the framework source and any evidence that shaped your learning supports the reflection without turning it into a literature review. Admitting what still feels hard usually makes a reflection more believable.

NUR 593 Module 7 help: mistakes that cost marks

The most common weakness is a reflection that lists assignments completed instead of what changed. Use one example per category. Another is generic praise for the course; focus on your learning. Be honest about difficulties. Make future plans specific to your role. If the prompt requires Fink's categories, use all six. Keep the tone professional. If you would like help organizing your significant learning reflection, send the prompt and your portfolio to the desk. Reread your first portfolio assignment before writing, since comparing your early and final thinking often provides the clearest examples of change. Draft one paragraph per category, then cut repetition.
