NUR 502 Module 7 Course Reflection Example

Reviewed by Ingrid Vasterling, MSN, RN Arizona State University Updated October 2026

This NUR 502 Module 7 example is the course reflection, a short paper worth 5 points that closes Advanced Health Assessment and Health Promotion in ASU's online MS in Nursing. The ASU NUR 502 syllabus asks students to judge whether the course outcomes were met, suggest what could be improved, and name the most transformational assignment. The composite writer, a care coordinator at a Phoenix safety-net hospital, reviews the outcomes through her own work in the course, a policy board on readmission penalties, a new drug presentation on suzetrigine and a case study of valley fever. She names the drug presentation as the most transformational, explains why, and offers two specific suggestions for improving the course.

What Changed in How I See My Patients: A Course Reflection on Advanced Health Assessment and Health Promotion

Introduction

This reflection reviews my experience in NUR 502, judges whether I met the course outcomes, identifies the assignment that changed my practice most, and suggests improvements. The common thread in my work was vulnerable populations: patients at a safety-net hospital whose income, insurance, language and work shape their health as much as any diagnosis.

Meeting the Course Outcomes

The course outcomes centered on applying advanced health assessment, pathophysiology, pharmacology and health promotion to vulnerable populations and on understanding the policy context. I believe I met them, with one area of growth.

Policy and vulnerable populations: In the Week 2 board I analyzed Medicare's readmissions program and its 2019 revision, which sorts hospitals into peer groups by their proportion of dual-eligible patients. A national study showed how that change shifted penalties away from hospitals serving the poorest patients (Joynt Maddox et al., 2019). I now see policy as part of patient care rather than something separate from it.

Pharmacology and adherence: The new drug presentation required me to read a full FDA label and the phase 3 trials for suzetrigine, a new non-opioid analgesic. I learned to separate what a trial shows from how a drug is marketed, since the trials showed pain relief similar to, not better than, an opioid combination (Bertoch et al., 2025).

Assessment, pathophysiology and health promotion: The valley fever case study joined normal lung physiology, disease mechanisms, assessment, treatment and prevention for outdoor workers. Writing it made me realize how often the illness is mistaken for bacterial pneumonia, which matches the national guideline's emphasis on asking about exposure (Galgiani et al., 2016).

My area of growth is physical assessment skills themselves. The course emphasized integration and writing more than hands-on assessment, so I will seek continuing education in advanced assessment as I move into a care coordination leadership role.

The Most Transformational Assignment

The new drug presentation was the most transformational. Before it, I relied on drug references and package inserts only when a question came up. Reading the complete prescribing information taught me how much nurses need to know that never reaches a quick reference: the contraceptive interaction, the empty-stomach first dose and the lack of data beyond 14 days. It also made me think about adherence for my patients in a new way. A new brand-name drug may be appropriate clinically but unaffordable, and a prescription that cannot be filled is worse than useless. Since the presentation, I have started checking coverage and cost before discharge for any new medication, which is a small but lasting change in my practice.

Suggestions for Improving the Course

First, the course could include a short assignment on screening for social needs, such as food insecurity, unstable housing and lack of transport, with a validated tool, since these needs came up in every assignment but were never assessed directly. Second, the new drug presentation could include a brief peer review step, so students learn from each other's drugs; I saw only a few classmates' presentations and would have benefited from more.

Conclusion

NUR 502 changed how I see my patients: as members of populations shaped by policy, cost and work as much as by disease. I leave with stronger skills in reading primary sources and a habit of asking whether a patient can actually follow the plan we give them.

What the NUR 502 Module 7 instructions ask for

The Course Reflection is a 5-point Week 7 assignment in the posted syllabus, due alongside the course evaluation. The syllabus describes it as a short paper reflecting on the course and determining whether course outcomes were met, what could be improved in the course, and the most transformational assignment. Generally you will address each course outcome, give evidence from your own assignments, name and explain the assignment that changed your thinking or practice most, and offer constructive suggestions. Make sure you know the length, whether APA format and sources are required, and whether the reflection is submitted as a paper or a recording. Keep the tone professional, since faculty read these reflections when revising the course.

Inside the NUR 502 Module 7 example

The reflection opens with the theme that ran through the writer's work, vulnerable populations, and then reviews the course outcomes in three groups, each tied to a specific assignment and a cited source from that assignment. It names an honest area of growth. One section explains why the new drug presentation was transformational, with a concrete change in practice. Two specific, constructive suggestions follow, and a brief conclusion states what the writer takes forward. The paper stays short, as the assignment asks, while still citing sources where it refers to them. Sources from earlier assignments are cited where the reflection draws on them, and the paper stays short.

NUR 502 Module 7 rubric: what earns full marks

Course reflections are usually graded on completeness, meaning that outcomes, the transformational assignment and improvement suggestions are all addressed; on specificity, with examples from actual assignments; and on depth of reflection. Faculty look for honest judgments rather than praise, including an area where the writer still needs growth. Suggestions should be constructive and practical. Because the assignment is short and worth few points, clarity and directness matter more than length, but APA format may still be required if sources are cited. An honest growth area and practical suggestions usually earn more than unqualified praise of the course. Specific examples from your own assignments show the reflection is grounded.

NUR 502 Module 7 help from the desk

The most common mistake is a reflection that lists course topics or praises the course without evidence. Tie each outcome to something you did. Another is choosing a transformational assignment without saying what changed. Describe a specific change in thinking or practice. Make suggestions concrete, such as adding a peer review step, rather than general comments. Keep it short. For help organizing a reflection on the work you actually did, send the desk the prompt and a list of what you completed. Write the reflection soon after finishing the last assignment, while details are fresh. Keep feedback about the course constructive and specific, since faculty use it to revise the course.
