NUR 350 Module 1 Leadership Style Analysis Discussion Board Example

Reviewed by Ingrid Vasterling, MSN, RN Arizona State University Updated October 2026

This NUR 350 Module 1 sample is the Leadership Style Analysis discussion board in Professional Nurse Attributes: Accomplished, the senior course in ASU's prelicensure BSN. ASU NUR 350 asks students to complete an assessment of their leadership style and post a reflection on what the results mean. The composite senior, finishing a capstone on an ICU unit in Phoenix, scored highest on democratic leadership and lowest on directive leadership on a leadership styles questionnaire. Her post compares the results with a code simulation in which waiting for agreement slowed compressions, explains when each style fits nursing work and sets out how she will practice switching. A reply to a classmate with the opposite profile follows.

Leadership Style Analysis: What My Results Say About Leading From the Bedside

Democratic Until the Monitor Alarms: Reflecting on My Leadership Style Results

Initial Post

On the leadership styles questionnaire from our course reading, I scored highest on democratic leadership, the style that involves the group in decisions, and lowest on directive leadership, which gives clear instructions and expects them to be followed (Northouse, 2021). The results did not surprise me. In group projects I ask everyone's opinion before deciding, and classmates describe me as a good listener.

Our code-blue simulation last month showed the limit of that style. I was assigned to lead. When the mannequin's rhythm changed, I asked the team, "What do you all think we should do?" Ten seconds passed before anyone answered. My instructor's debrief was kind but clear: in an emergency, the team needs someone to name the next action and assign it.

Democratic leadership has real strengths. Reviews of nursing leadership link relational styles to better nurse satisfaction, retention and work environments (Cummings et al., 2018), and involving staff builds commitment to decisions. But a single style is not enough. Situational approaches describe effective leaders as those who adjust how directive they are to the task and the team's readiness (Northouse, 2021). A code is a task with no time for discussion; planning a unit's new music protocol for ventilated patients, my capstone topic, is a task where staff input makes the change stick.

My plan for the first year as a new graduate: practice short, directive phrases for urgent moments, such as "Maria, start compressions; Dev, get the defibrillator," and keep democratic habits for planning, huddles and change projects. I will ask my preceptor to tell me when I am asking a question that should be a direction.

Question for the group: did your results match how you acted in the code simulation?

What this page is doingThe post reports the specific result, tests it against a real event, uses the course text to explain when the style helps and when it fails, and ends with a concrete plan, which is what turns a quiz score into reflection.

Reply to a Classmate (Highest Score: Directive)

You scored the opposite of me and led the code smoothly. I wonder whether the same strength might make it harder for staff to bring you ideas on a quiet shift, and that matters, since teams learn more when members feel safe to speak up (Edmondson, 1999). Your plan to ask one open question at every huddle sounds like the mirror image of my plan. Maybe we should compare notes at the end of the semester.

Reading the NUR 350 Module 1 assignment instructions

The posted syllabus lists the Leadership Style Analysis discussion board at 5% of the NUR 350 grade. Students complete an assessment of their leadership style and then discuss their reflection on the findings with classmates. Canvas names the assessment tool, the posting dates and the rubric. Expect to report your results honestly, connect them to your experiences in clinical, simulation or group work, explain what the results mean for your practice as a new graduate nurse using leadership concepts from the course, and respond to at least one classmate. A reflection that tests your results against a real situation is usually stronger than one that only describes the style. Choose an example from your capstone or clinical setting where your style helped or got in the way.

Inside the NUR 350 Module 1 example

The post opens with the student's highest and lowest scores and what each style means, citing the course text. A short account of a code simulation shows the democratic style failing in an urgent moment, with the instructor's feedback. The next paragraph weighs the strengths of democratic leadership with evidence and uses a situational view to explain when to switch styles, contrasting a code with a planning task from the capstone. A concrete first-year plan follows, with example phrases and a way to get feedback. The reply contrasts the writer's profile with a classmate's opposite one. Two sources support the post.

Reading the NUR 350 Module 1 grading rubric

Discussion reflections in this course are likely graded on reporting the assessment results, depth of reflection, use of leadership concepts and evidence, application to nursing practice, a substantive reply and professional writing. Reflection earns most when results are tested against a specific experience rather than accepted at face value. Using a situational or contingency view to explain when a style fits shows understanding beyond the quiz. A plan with concrete behaviors shows readiness for practice. Replies should add a perspective or a question. APA citations apply even on a discussion board. Posting on time leaves room for classmates to respond. A plan with specific phrases or behaviors shows the reflection will change practice.

NUR 350 Module 1 help from the desk

A common weakness is a post that lists the style's traits and says "this is me." Test the result against something you actually did. Another is treating one style as always best; most leadership texts describe adapting to the situation. Keep classmates' and patients' details out of the post. Your scores and one clinical or simulation example give the desk enough to help draft a reflection. Use the exact name of the assessment tool your course assigns. Trim the post until every paragraph earns its place. Tie your plan to the first months of your new graduate role, when habits of delegation and speaking up are still forming.
