From the Delivery Room to the Population: An Introduction to Public and Global Health Nursing
Student Name
Edson College of Nursing and Health Innovation, Arizona State University
NUR 495: Public and Global Health in Nursing
Instructor Name
Month Day, Year
Slide 1: Who I Am
Registered nurse, 8 years. Labor and delivery, Phoenix area, about 300 births a month on our unit. RN to BSN student, final semester.
Speaker notes: Hello, everyone. I have been a nurse for eight years, the last six in labor and delivery at a large hospital in the Phoenix area. I love the moment a family meets their baby. I have also seen the other side: mothers who arrive with no prenatal care, babies born too small, and families who leave without the support they need. That is why public health interests me.
Slide 2: My Work as Population Health
Arizona, 2023: 430 infant deaths, 5.5 per 1,000 live births. Low birthweight: 8.1 per 100 births. Maricopa County infant mortality: 5.6 per 1,000 (Arizona Department of Health Services, 2024).
Speaker notes: I used to think of my patients one at a time. Looking at state data changed that. In 2023 Arizona recorded 430 infant deaths, an infant mortality rate of 5.5 per 1,000 live births, and low birthweight in 8.1 of every 100 births. Maricopa County, where I work, had an infant mortality rate of 5.6 (Arizona Department of Health Services, 2024). Each number is a population made of patients like mine. Public health nursing asks what happens upstream of the delivery room.
Slide 3: Values I Already Practice
Respect for each family's culture and choices. Advocacy for mothers who are not heard. Care for the whole family, not only the patient in the bed.
Speaker notes: Our module describes the core values of public health nursing, including a focus on populations, attention to social determinants, social justice, and partnership with communities (Stanhope & Lancaster, 2024). I already practice some of these at the bedside, and our earlier coursework described advocacy as a professional responsibility rather than a personality trait (Friberg & Saewert, 2023). I respect families' choices, I advocate for mothers whose concerns are dismissed, and I think of the newborn, parents and siblings as a unit.
Slide 4: The Value I Want to Grow
Social justice: asking why some groups of mothers and babies fare worse, and what nurses can do beyond the hospital.
Speaker notes: The value I want to grow is social justice. I see differences in who arrives with prenatal care and who does not, but I have rarely asked why or what could change it. In this course I want to learn how nurses work with communities and policymakers to change the conditions that shape health before a woman ever reaches my unit.
Slide 5: My Goal for NUR 495
Understand one maternal health problem at the population level, in Arizona and globally, and identify one way a bedside nurse can act on it.
Speaker notes: My goal is to choose one maternal health problem, follow it from Arizona data to global data, and leave the course with one concrete way a labor and delivery nurse can help. I followed the presentation guidelines by keeping each slide to a few lines, using readable font sizes and putting the explanation in these notes. I look forward to learning about your work and your goals.

What the NUR 495 Module 1 instructions ask for
The posted syllabus for this class opens Module 1 with the core professional values of community and public health nurses, readings from Stanhope and Lancaster, an orientation certificate on core professional values, an introductory quiz, and introductions to peers. The syllabus says students post to two discussion boards in the term, and the first shows understanding of the new PowerPoint presentation guidelines by creating an introduction. The prompt usually asks you to introduce yourself, your practice setting and your interest in public health, linked to the module's values, in a short deck that follows the posted guidelines. Check Canvas for the slide limit, font and design rules, and whether narration is required.
How the NUR 495 Module 1 example is put together
The sample has five slides, each limited to a few lines, with full speaker notes beneath. It introduces a composite labor and delivery nurse, then turns her bedside work into population health with real Arizona 2023 vital statistics, cited on the slide. Two slides connect her practice to public health nursing values, one she already practices and one she wants to grow, using the course text. The last slide sets a specific goal for the course and notes how the deck follows presentation guidelines. The numbers come from the state health department's advance vital statistics report. The data slide cites the state report directly on the slide, as presentation guidelines usually require. A reference slide lists the three sources used.
Where the marks sit in the NUR 495 Module 1 rubric
Because this board is used to check presentation skills, graders typically look at both content and design: whether the slides follow the posted guidelines on text, font and layout, whether the introduction covers the required elements, and whether it connects the student to public health values. Any figure or reading on a slide needs its citation there, plus a closing reference slide. A clear goal for the course is a common requirement. Late posting or a deck that ignores the guidelines tends to lose points quickly, since the board carries part of the 13% discussion weight. Instructors may also check that slide colors and fonts meet accessibility standards, such as sufficient contrast.
NUR 495 Module 1 help: mistakes that cost marks
Students often put too much text on each slide, which is exactly what presentation guidelines are meant to prevent. Keep slides brief and use notes or narration for detail. Another mistake is an introduction with no link to public health; connect your setting to a population. Use real, cited data if you include numbers, and check that you copy them correctly. Avoid personal health details you do not want to share. If you would like help building an introduction deck that fits your course's guidelines, send them with your outline. Read the posted guidelines once more after you finish and compare each slide against them, line by line. Replying to classmates' introductions may also be required.
