Learner and Harmony: How Two Strengths Shape the Way I Communicate and Lead

Introduction

The Strengths Finder 2.0 assessment identifies a person's most natural patterns of thinking, feeling and behaving, on the premise that people grow most by developing what they already do well rather than fixing weaknesses (Rath, 2007). My top two themes were Learner and Harmony.

Strength 1: Learner

People strong in Learner are energized by the process of learning itself. In my work at a hospital pharmacy, this shows up when a new automated dispensing cabinet arrives: I read the manual, watch the vendor videos and become the person others ask. In communication, Learner makes me ask a lot of questions, which helps me understand problems before proposing fixes.

The blind spot is that I can enjoy learning so much that I delay acting. I also tend to explain too much when a coworker only wants the short answer.

For innovation, Learner is valuable because innovators must absorb new evidence and technology quickly. As a leader, I can use it to build learning into a team, for example by sharing short summaries of new research rather than keeping knowledge to myself.

Strength 2: Harmony

People strong in Harmony look for areas of agreement and dislike conflict. On my unit, I am often the person who helps two technicians with different routines find a compromise. In communication, Harmony makes me a calm listener who looks for common ground.

Its blind spot is avoiding necessary conflict. Innovation often requires challenging how things have always been done, and I sometimes stay quiet when I disagree. Research on leadership emphasizes that effective leaders combine empathy and social skill with the self-awareness to recognize such patterns (Goleman, 1998).

Leading Versus Managing

Kotter (1990) distinguished management, which handles complexity through planning and control, from leadership, which handles change by setting direction and aligning people. My Learner strength supports the direction-setting side of leadership, because I bring in new ideas. Harmony supports aligning people, but only if I learn to name disagreements early rather than smoothing them over.

Conclusion

Knowing my strengths helps me communicate better: I will give shorter answers when people need them and speak up when I disagree, using Harmony to keep the conversation respectful rather than to avoid it.

What the HCI 311 Module 2 instructions ask for

The My Strengths and Personal Communications Essay is the Module 2B written assignment in HCI 311, part of the course's leadership section. After completing the Strengths Finder 2.0 survey, write and submit a one- to two-page paper exploring two of your strengths from your results. The module's readings on leadership, including how leaders and managers think differently, give you the frame. Explain what each strength looks like in your life, how it shapes the way you communicate and how you can use it, along with its blind spots, as a leader in health innovation. Use APA 7 formatting and cite the assessment and any readings you draw on. Check Canvas for the rubric and point value before you write. Keep your Strengths Finder report handy while writing so your descriptions stay accurate.

How this HCI 311 Module 2 example is built

The sample introduces the assessment's premise in two sentences and names two themes. Each strength gets its own section with an everyday example from work, its effect on communication, a blind spot and how it could serve an innovation leader. A short section connects both strengths to the classic distinction between leading and managing, and the conclusion states two concrete changes the writer will make. The examples come from the student's own job, which makes each strength concrete, and every blind spot is paired with a plan for managing it at work. The conclusion names two specific behaviors the writer will change, which turns self-knowledge into a plan.

Reading the HCI 311 Module 2 grading rubric

Readers look for two clearly identified strengths from the student's own results, specific examples rather than definitions copied from the report, honest attention to blind spots, a link to communication and to leadership concepts from the module and correct APA formatting within one to two pages. Marks drop when students paste the theme descriptions from the Gallup report, discuss only one strength, skip communication, ignore the leadership readings or exceed the page limit. Instructors also reward essays that show how a strength affects others on a team, since the module ties strengths to communication and leadership rather than to personal success alone. Honest, specific self-assessment earns the highest marks.

HCI 311 Module 2 help from the desk

Read your strengths report and underline one sentence for each theme that sounds most like you, then think of a real example. Ask a friend or coworker how they see that strength in you. Name a blind spot honestly; instructors value self-awareness. Connect each strength to one idea from the leadership readings. Keep it to two pages. If your results seem unfamiliar, the desk can help you interpret them. Avoid copying the theme definitions word for word; describe what the strength looks like when you do it. Keep the leadership connection to one paragraph. Proofread for APA headings. Then read it aloud once.
